  • Essential Layers for Staying Warm in Cold Weather

Cold weather can be challenging, especially when you want to remain comfortable while staying out for an extended period of time. Dressing properly for the cold is not just about piling on clothes but about choosing the right layers that work together to keep you warm, dry, and cozy. This guide breaks down the essential cold-weather dressing, offering practical layering techniques to ensure you’re perfectly prepared for the Vermont elements. If you’re unsure about your gear, stop by Umiak Outdoor Outfitters in Stowe, where our expert team will help you dial in your layers for maximum comfort or help you pick out new gear to add to your wardrobe. Start with a Good Base Layer The base layer is the foundation of your cold-weather outfit. Its main job is to manage moisture by wicking sweat away from your skin. This helps your body stay dry and prevents chills caused by damp clothing. Avoid cotton at all costs because it traps moisture and makes you colder. Choose long underwear tops and bottoms made from materials like merino wool or synthetic fibers such as polyester or nylon blends. These fabrics are breathable and dry quickly, making them perfect for active days in the cold. For example, a merino wool base layer can keep you warm even when damp, which is ideal for winter hikes or outdoor sports. Add a Warm Mid Layer The mid layer’s purpose is to trap body heat and provide insulation. On very cold days, wearing multiple mid layers is a smart strategy because you can remove one if you start to overheat. Look for synthetic or wool fabrics for your mid layers. Synthetics, like fleece, are lightweight, breathable, and dry quickly, while wool offers excellent warmth and natural odor resistance. Protect Yourself with an Outer Layer Your outer layer is the shield against wind, snow, rain, and ice. It should be windproof and water resistant to keep the elements out. A shell jacket or jacket with extra insulation works best in cold conditions. Choose an outer layer that fits comfortably over your base and mid layers without restricting movement. Features like adjustable hoods, cuffs, and ventilation zippers improve comfort and protection. Cover Your Face and Neck Cover your neck and face with a scarf, neck gaiter, balaclava, or other face coverings. These accessories block cold air and prevent frostbite on exposed skin. A neck gaiter can be pulled up over your nose and cheeks on windy days. Don’t Forget Your Hat, Socks, and Gloves Heat escapes quickly from your head and feet, so covering these areas is crucial. Wear a warm hat that covers your ears, and choose socks made from wool or synthetic fibers to keep your feet warm. It may be worth bringing an extra pair of socks to change into so you always have a fresh, dry pair! Protect your hands with high-quality insulated gloves or mittens. Waterproof and windproof gear is essential. Use Hand Warmers and Toe Warmers for Extra Warmth On especially chilly days, disposable or reusable hand warmers and toe warmers provide an extra layer of heat. These small packets generate warmth for hours and can be slipped inside gloves or boots. You can find these warmers at Umiak Outdoor Outfitters and other outdoor shops. Having these on hand makes a big difference during long outdoor activities. Bring a Hot Drink to Stay Cozy Holding and sipping a hot drink warms your hands and body from the inside. If possible, bring a thermos filled with tea, coffee, or hot chocolate before, during, or after your outdoor adventure. Umiak Outdoor Outfitters provides a hot drink on every tour, but having your own allows you to enjoy warmth whenever you need it. This simple step adds comfort and helps maintain your body temperature. Keep Active The best way to maintain your body heat is to keep moving! Whether we’re trekking through the snow or exploring a viewpoint, staying active helps our bodies generate natural warmth. Don't be afraid to keep those toes wiggling and your arms moving to keep the blood flowing!

  • The Hot New Xplore Bindings

Discover the future of backcountry skiing with the innovative Rottefella Xplore bindings ! Umiak Outdoor Outfitters has had the pleasure of testing this system for the past few years, and we are excited to share our firsthand experience with our customers. The new Rottefella Xplore binding system stands out by offering features that enhance performance, comfort, and safety. They merge functionality with modern design. They are easy to use, lightweight, and responsive. Whether you’re navigating smooth trails or tackling rugged terrains, these bindings are a worthy investment for anyone eager to enhance their skiing experience. One standout feature of the bindings is their enhanced stability . The bindings create a secure connection between the boot and ski, leading to improved control during turns and descents. The laterally stiff boot soles transmit control to the skis better than other backcountry bindings without sacrificing the natural roll of your foot walking forward. The step-in Xplore bindings' design allows for the flex you want in the terrain you are skiing. The rubber toe piece of the binding is replaceable on the mountain. The hard rubber transmits more force to the ski for better downhill control. There is a regular rubber for all-terrain, up and down conditions. The flat insert makes the binding float off the toe like an AT binding, providing no resistance for those long uphill climbs. Xplore bindings are constructed from lightweight, durable materials. They weigh just under 1 pound (approximately 450 grams) each, making uphill treks easier. Umiak has experienced that you can ski longer before that increasing feeling of fatigue sends you home. The Rottefella Xplore bindings come equipped with features designed to enhance safety. The spring-loaded pins in the boot make it easy to step into the binding and will release under specific conditions, which can lower the risk of injury during falls . This feature is particularly beneficial for off-piste skiing, where falls can be more frequent. Knowing that the bindings will release when needed lets you confidently push your limits. The Rottefella Xplore bindings represent an innovative leap in backcountry skiing bindings. With features like enhanced stability, a user-friendly design, lightweight construction, safety measures, and customizable settings, these bindings meet the diverse needs of modern skiers. Whether you are an experienced skier or a beginner, investing in Rottefella Xplore bindings can genuinely enhance your time on the slopes . As you explore new trails and tackle various terrains, you can ski with confidence, knowing your equipment is tailored for support and performance. Umiak Outdoor Outfitters in Stowe, Vermont, has demos you can rent on a variety of skis so you can "ski" for yourself! If you decide to buy into the system , we'll deduct the rental cost from your purchase price.

  • Embracing the Transition: From Summer Adventures to Winter Dreams

Yesterday was a day to call in sick to work. After a week of chilly, cloudy, and rainy weather, the sun came out with a high in the 50s. The drysuit hangs waiting, the fleece is there in a pile, it was a rare fair day to soak the canoe.   Alas, duty called. There was much to be done to bring skis and snowshoes out from storage to display on the wall. There is snow on the mountains, and those November days of expectation are back. Grey clouds and colder temperatures bring thoughts of white powder dreams back again.   It’s the duality of the season. The water isn’t frozen. There isn’t enough snow to use. The boat is still out. The skis are in the rafters. What is there to do? Which way to turn?   The inevitable is upon us. Time to oil the gunwales, mothball the canoes, and exchange paddle gear for parkas and snow pants . Put up the paddles and take down the skis.   The store is in transition, along with the rest of us. There are skis where there once were SUPs . Microspikes have replaced Tevas . Boats are making their way to storage.   Change is good. There is opportunity in the chaos. There are great deals on canoes, kayaks, and SUPs .  Paddling accessories are 15% off. There are the new Rossignol XP 85s and 105s to check out. Deals on demo tele and AT gear.   Stop by and chat about winter or summer; we don't mind which. Stick season is slow, and we’d be glad to see you.

  • Ready to Swim? Protect Yourself with Must-Have Safety Gear

Many paddlers are putting up their boats for the winter. Kayaks hanging from the rafters, canoes under the deck, SUPs against the wall and some inflatables under the bed. A lot of the folks we know are still paddling. They’re seeking out those last day trips and final excursions to favorite camping spots. It is the “season of the sticks,” as Noah Kahn sings - the between-time of boats to skis.   There is no snow in the mountains, but the air temperature rarely reaches 70 this late in the year. The water temperatures are dropping, which leads us to consideration of the 120 rule: if the combined air and water temperature adds up to less than 120 degrees, you need to guard against hypothermia.   The easiest way to do this is to stay dry. Easy enough unless you swim. Water zaps heat away from your body faster than air, but if you come out of the water wet and the air isn’t warm enough, your body temperature continues to drop. This is uncomfortable at best and dangerous in the worst case.   Mustang Survival - Men's Hudson CCS Dry Suit The safest solution is a breathable dry suit, a one-piece outer garment with integrated socks and sealed at the wrists and neck. You can add the layers underneath to stay comfortable while paddling and be protected if you capsize. They aren’t cheap, but they allow you to paddle safely until the water freezes and you can be the first one out in the spring – potentially two extra months of paddling each year. We have some from Mustang Survival that have a comfortable neoprene wrist cuffs and an adjustable a neck seal. Do we need to remind you to wear your PFD ? 90% of boating fatalities occur between October 1 and Memorial Day because people fall into the water without their PFD. It’s like a seat belt. You can’t predict when you will need it. As you continue to enjoy those last paddling adventures of the season, remember that safety should always come first. Investing in proper gear like a breathable dry suit and always wearing your PFD can make the difference between a memorable trip and a dangerous situation. Cooler water and air temperatures and unpredictable weather mean that preparedness is key. With the right clothing and safety equipment, you can extend your paddling season comfortably and confidently, making the most of these beautiful transitional months while staying safe on the water. An adventurer in a dry suit and life jacket climbs onto a snow-dusted paddleboard, surrounded by a tranquil, mountainous landscape.

  • Rainy Fall Day at the Shop

The much-needed rain is finally on its way to grace our area. You might think things would slow down on a gray rainy day, but things are steady at the paddle shop. A couple of folks came in to fix their canoes. One is an old Mad River getting new seats before a trip to the Allagash. The other another MRC with a full re-rail - gunwales and deck plates. Bob popped in sporting a 17’ Wenonah in an elegant, fitted shroud. Straight as a rail, he called it a “mile eater.” Nice boat, but that’s not why he stopped by. He’s travelling around and stopped because he saw our racks of canoes. Turns out he’s thinking about a boat to get back to playing on rivers. Something to bounce off rocks and stuff. He’s no neophyte. Talking with him, I found that he’s been paddling and even in the canoe/kayak business as a manufacturer’s representative. Many references to Idaho, Washington, Colorado… He had just finished 80 days on the Mississippi! “I’m not looking to buy a boat,” he says. I enjoyed the conversation as we wandered over to our rack of Esquif canoes. A 16’ Prospecteur caught his eye. “You want to try it? We have a pond out back. Grab your paddles.” “Really?” The test paddle pond on a rainy day is surrounded by autumn foliage, with gentle raindrops rippling across the water's surface. Off we went, talking canoe this and paddle that. We put him on the water and he left the dock, sitting solo on the bow seat, paddling the boat backwards. That’s what you do when paddling a tandem canoe alone because it trims, or balances the boat. It was a pleasure to watch him play with it. You put a good paddler in a canoe, and they can make it dance. He used a variety of strokes, paddling straight with a hit and switch, on-side and off-side turns, smooth 90-degree turns with a little push, and leaning a bit. He came back grinning. “This is just what I’m looking for.” I gave him a great price because, well, it’s a grey day at the end of September. I love matching folks up with the boat of their dreams. We spent the next half-hour looking at his truck, scheming different ways to get two canoes on his truck along with a bike rack. Nothing seemed to work. I said that Green River Reservoir and Lake Willoughby were beautiful places to paddle before leaving. He’s in town for a few weeks – maybe he’ll be back with a plan to put that second boat on his truck. -John

  • Convenience of Online Shopping Costing You the "Try Before You Buy" Experience?

In today's fast-paced world, online shopping has seamlessly integrated into our lives. With just a few clicks, you can explore countless products, compare prices, and get your orders delivered right to your doorstep. While this convenience is appealing, have you thought about what you might miss out on by skipping the " try before you buy " experience? The Loss of Tactile Interaction Online shopping misses out on the valuable sensory experience of in-person shopping. For instance, think of how you shop for a kayak, canoe, or standup paddleboard at our physical store. You can feel the weight, check the material, test the comfort level, and even test paddle it on the water. These important tactile experiences influence your purchasing decisions significantly. This interaction helps ensure that the product fits your needs perfectly. The Human Element of Expert Advice A man prepares to test a paddle kayak on Umiak's pond with assistance from a staff member. While online retailers provide extensive selections, they often lack the personal interaction and expert guidance found in physical stores. Visiting a brick-and-mortar location allows you to ask questions and receive tailored advice , helping you discover features or options you might miss online. For instance, when comparing different brands of life jackets, a knowledgeable sales associate can explain the differences in fit, features, and performance, greatly enhancing your decision-making process. At Umiak, our staff is not only certified and trained by the American Canoe Association (ACA) , but they also personally try and test all equipment, ensuring they can provide you with first-hand, expert insights to help you make the best choice. Immediate Gratification vs. Anticipation The owner of Umiak Outdoor Outfitters poses with two happy customers who just purchased their new kayaks, ready for adventure. Another advantage of in-store shopping is the immediate satisfaction of taking home your new gear. Online purchases often require patience. Research shows that more than 30% of consumers experience buyer's remorse because they feel disappointed when their product doesn't meet their expectations. The instant gratification from an in-person purchase contributes to a positive shopping experience. When you leave the store with your new equipment, satisfaction kicks in right away instead of after several days of waiting. The Risks of Relying on Reviews The most common resource for online shoppers, product reviews, can be misleading. Consumers often encounter fake reviews that do not reflect the actual experiences with products. Visiting a traditional outfitter allows you to interact with other customers and staff, gathering diverse perspectives that lead to well-informed choices. Mindful Shopping for Better Decisions Many consumers are drawn to the ease of online shopping, resulting in impulse buys. This can fill your closet or house with items that are not entirely suitable for your needs. Many online shoppers regret their impulse purchases. In-store trials help ensure that your selections will be practical and appreciated. Finding the Right Balance So, how do you strike a balance in your shopping habits? You can use online shopping for items you already know and trust to enjoy convenience, but for new products—especially those involving performance, like outdoor gear—visiting a local store is essential. Plus, shopping locally not only helps sustain small businesses and local jobs but also fosters personal relationships and access to expert advice that online stores often lack. Supporting local companies strengthens your community and ensures you have access to quality, personalized service. Shop in-store to ensure you can try, fit, and evaluate items firsthand, leading to better decisions! Outdoor adventure awaits at Umiak in Stowe, featuring a vibrant display of kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, clothing, and backcountry skis under a sunny sky.
