ACA Community Paddlesports Leader Certification OVERVIEW Community Paddlesports Leader Certification & Smart Start for Safe Paddling Certification Those participating in the Community Paddlesports Leader Certification will be equipped with the trip planning and leadership skills to provide safe and enjoyable day trips with a variety of watercraft in environments suitable for beginners and novice paddlers. The certification is an entry point for new leaders who have minimal experience with paddling and need support with foundational paddling basics. Leader candidates will focus on developing the competencies necessary to lead a variety of paddlecraft in flat water environments. This certification also includes the Smart Start for Safe Paddling Certification, which teaches basic safety and paddling knowledge, as well as simple rescue skills for canoe, kayak, and SUP. What is the ACA? Founded in 1880, the American Canoe Association (ACA) is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting paddlesports through education and stewardship. They provide certification programs for those interested in teaching canoeing, kayaking, and standup paddleboarding in various water conditions. The ACA is widely acknowledged as the governing body for paddling activities in the United States and over 30 other countries. Why should I take this course? ACA River Paddlesports Leader Certification OVERVIEW River Paddlesports Leader Certification & Smart Start for Safe Paddling Certification Those participating in the River Leader course will be equipped to lead on flatwater to mild whitewater conditions. Leaders candidates paddling river canoes, kayaks, and SUPs will focus on the competencies necessary to lead day trips and perform essential swifwater rescue in class I-II waters. Dive into a dynamic learning experience that covers on-the-water management techniques, decision-making, communication, planning, risk management, and rescue solutions - all while having fun and exploring a range of natural environments. This certification also includes the Smart Start for Safe Paddling Certification, which teaches basic safety and paddling knowledge, as well as simple rescue skills for canoe, kayak, and SUP. What is the ACA? Founded in 1880, the American Canoe Association (ACA) is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting paddlesports through education and stewardship. They provide certification programs for those interested in teaching canoeing, kayaking, and standup paddleboarding in various water conditions. The ACA is widely acknowledged as the governing body for paddling activities in the United States and over 30 other countries. Why should I take this course? This certification will add credibility to yourself as a source of paddlesports safety information, as well as provide official documentation of your skills and experience for your employer, insurance carrier, or resume. In order to receive official credentialing documentation of this certification, you must be an ACA member. Snowshoe: A snowshoe is a specialized footwear device crafted for walking on snow. Its designed to distribute weight and prevent sinking. It features straps to attach securely to your boots and includes traction elements, such as crampons on the bottom, to improve stability on slippery terrain. Traction Device: A traction device provides grip and stability on icy or snowy surfaces by featuring small, sharp metal or rubber spikes that dig into the terrain, helping to prevent slips and falls during winter conditions. POLICIES Cancellation Policy: For non-holiday programs, cancellations must be made at least 48 hours prior to the tour for a refund. For holiday or custom programs, cancellations require at least 7 days' notice to qualify for a refund. Cancellations made within these time frames are non-refundable. No-shows will be charged the full price. Weather Policy: Full refunds will be issued if the tour is canceled due to adverse weather or unforeseen circumstances. Umiak reserves the right to cancel, postpone, delay or change the tour location for safety reasons. In the event of ice or insufficient snow conditions tours change to hikes with traction devices or overshoes. Gratuity Policy: An automatic 18% gratuity will be added to all bookings for groups of six or more participants.
